Odisha celebrates Maha Vishuba Sankranti; PM, CM greet people
Bhubaneswar: People of the State on Sunday visited various temples on the occasion of Maha Vishuba Sankranti or Pana Sankranti, which heralds the Odia New Year.
The festival marks the introduction of new Panjika, which is an almanac of Hindu religious festivals, timings and predictions for the year. It is prepared as per solar calendar and incorporates the auspicious dates, times, the sun rise and sunset time, the stars and their movements from Mesha Sankranti till Mina Sankranti.
Devotees also performed special puja on the occasion, which is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman.
People celebrate the advent of the New Year by drinking pana, a sweet-sour drink made with bael, fruits and sugar.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik greeted the people of Odisha on the occasion of Odia New Year.
“This Maha Vishuba Sankranti may all your wishes come true. Praying for everyone’s well-being and happiness,” the Prime Minister tweeted.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also took to twitter to wish the people on the occasion of ‘Vishuba Sankranti’: “I pray that the New Year brings happiness and prosperity to all with the blessings of Lord Jagannath.”
