5 held for looting Rs.2 crore, jewellery through fake ‘CBI Raid’

Bhubaneswar: Five persons were arrested by the Commissionerate Police on Sunday in connection with the robbery committed at a house in Nandan Vihar area of Bhubaneswar recently.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh told reporters that four others are suspected to be involved in the robbery committed in a planned manner on August 2. Efforts are on to trace and nab them at the earliest.

The accused persons entered the house of one Nibaran Pani on August 2 impersonating CBI officers on the pretext of conducting a raid. The gang members thoroughly searched the house located under Infocity police limits and decamped with Rs 2 crore cash and gold jewellery.

On being informed, police launched an investigation and got some clues form a bag left behind by the robbers at the site. Five of the gang members were arrested and efforts are on to nab the rest four.

Those arrested were identified as Sanatan Nayak of Angul, Harvansh Khan of Khurda, Sanjay Mallick of Kendrapada, Raja alias Ajmer Ali of Jajpur and Hemant Dhir of Angul, the DCP said. More than 10 cases are registered against the gang across Odisha.

The police have recovered and seized Rs 1.02 crore cash along, gold ornaments and a country-made semi-automatic pistol and other weapons from the accused, he said, expressing the hope that four others involved in the robbery would soon be caught and the rest of the stolen cash and ornaments recovered.
