COVID Spike: India Reports 743 Fresh Cases, Highest Single-Day Rise In 225 Days

New Delhi: The numbers may not yet be too significant, but there’s no doubt that coronavirus is rearing its head in India again.

The country on Saturday reported 743 fresh COVID infections, which marks the highest single-day rise in 225 days, reported PTI.

According to Union Health Ministry data, which was updated on Saturday morning, the number of active cases stood at 3,997.

The more worrying aspect is the fact that 7 deaths – 3 from Kerala, 2 from Karnataka and 1 each from Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu — were reported in a span of 24 hours.

To gauge the extent of spike in COVID cases, the number of daily cases remained in double digits till December 5 before starting to rise after emergence of a coronavirus sub-variant JN.1 amid cold weather conditions.

Declared a global pandemic by World Health Organization in March 2020, daily cases climbed to lakhs at the peak of COVID-19.

Over 4.5 crore people across the globe have been infected and around 5.3 lakh have people have died in close to years.

The number of people who have recovered from the deadly virus stands at over 4.4 crore with India’s recovery rate being 98.81%, according to the Health ministry’s website.
