New Delhi: The Gandhi family is set for a change of guard. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to end her 25-year Lok Sabha journey and venture into Rajya Sabha. Sonia is set to be the grand old party’s Rajya Sabha candidate from Rajasthan, according to top Congress sources.
Sonia could hand over the baton to daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, NDTV reported quoting sources. If Priyanka does take up the challenge for the first time, there are high chances of her contesting Lok Sabha polls from the family turf of Raebareli.
Sonia, who has been representing Raebareli in the Lok Sabha since 2006, had even won the UP constituency in the last general elections in 2019, when the Congress bagged just 52 seats in all with Rahul Gandhi losing the other family turf Amethi, to BJP’s Smriti Irani.
The 77-year-old Sonia, who has not been keeping well for quite some time now, is likely to file her nomination from Jaipur in the next round of Rajya Sabha elections. The Election Commission has announced elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats on February 27.
Sonia has been representing Raebareli in the Lok Sabha since 2006. She had won the seat even in 2019, when the Congress performance was at its all-time low and Rahul Gandhi lost the other family turf of Uttar Pradesh — Amethi — to the BJP’s Smriti Irani.
