Bhubaneswar: Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Bhubaneswar, has arrested a former accountant of a company for Rs 2.63 crore alleged fraud.
The accused has been identified as Saroj Kumar Mohanty of Kaliabora in Jagatsinghpur district, He was nabbed from Bhubaneswar on May 8 on the basis of a complaint lodged by MD of Sealcoat Structural Works Pvt Ltd Biswajit Bhuyan. He had defrauded the company by making/using forged documents, according to an EOW release.
Investigation revealed that Saroj worked as an accountant with the company from 2006-08. He looked after the finance and accounts work of the company. He was also managing and controlling financial deals with banks apart from related bank transactions, tax matters, finalisation of balance sheets and profit and loss account.
During the FY 2015-16 to 2017-18, he siphoned off Rs.2.63 crore using forged documents like request letter to bank, putting false signature on the bank instruments and through illegal transactions. “The company usually issued cheques accompanied by a signed RTGS form for payment to the parties but the accused used one of the instructions for payment to the parties and cheque for misappropriating the same amount. In some of the banking instruments, he forged the signature of the signatory authority-cum-MD of the company. He also illegally transferred the amounts to many several accounts, including to his own. In some cases, he withdrew payments due to the parties using the bank instrument and subsequently, deposited lesser amount from the CDM in their accounts. He adopted many devious means to defalcate the company’s money for years amounting to Rs.2.63 crore,” the release added.
Several incriminating documents forged by Saroj Mohanty were also seized during investigation. Further investigation is underway.
