Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has imposed a 61-day fishing ban along the state’s coastal waters starting today, April 15, which will remain in effect until June 14.
According to sources, this annual measure is aimed at conserving marine biodiversity and supporting fish breeding during the spawning season.
The ban prohibits fishing by all mechanised boats and trawlers. However, traditional fishing boats that are up to 8.5 meters in length are exempted from the restriction.
The Fisheries Department has issued official instructions to fisheries officers in Ganjam, Kujang, Balasore, and Puri districts to ensure strict implementation of the ban under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act (OMFRA). Violations could lead to penalties including fines and imprisonment.
As a result of the ban, around 700 trawlers in Paradip alone will remain idle, affecting the livelihood of nearly 5,000 fishermen. Many have started returning to their native places for the two-month period.
Not only in Odisha, similar fishing bans are also being implemented in other coastal states of India.
