5 BJP workers injured in attack in ‘violence-prone’ Ganjam

Bhubaneswar: Election related violence erupted again in Odisha’s Ganjam district as a group of BJP workers was attacked by some miscreants on Sunday evening.

The incident took place when the miscreants intercepted Subash Chandra Barad, the husband of Dhiapadhal panchayat, at Betara square under Bhanjanagar police station. Barad and the miscreants had an argument which escalated into heated exchange of words.

As the agitated miscreants attacked Barad, he shouted for help and tried to escape. Some BJP workers and local villagers rushed to his help. But they were also not spared by the miscreants. At least five BJP workers were injured in the attack and admitted in a hospital in Bhanjanagar.

Following the incident, the locals staged a road blockade on Bhanjanagar-Daspalla National Highway leading to disruption of traffic movement. They demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants who allegedly belonged to BJD.

On being informed, Bhanjanagar SDPO and IIC rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitating villagers.

It may be noted that a BJP worker, Dilip Kumar Pahana, had died in a clashe at Srikrushnasaranpur village under Khallikote police limits in the district a few days back. The clash took place when a group objected to the erection of party banners by another group.

Dilip and three others were seriously injured. Dillip succumbed while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. His family held local MLA’s husband Daitari Behera responsible for the murder of Dilip.

Later, the DGP had announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been formed to investigate the death of the BJP worker.
