38 persons arrested for attack on police in Mayurbhanj

Baripada: Police have arrested 38 persons including 22 women in connection with alleged attack of an SDPO and other police personnel in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

According to police sources, tension prevailed in Belapal village under Badasahi police station in the district following an attack on a villager by two brothers over a land dispute on Thursday. Some villagers staged a road blockade demanding arrest of the two brothers.

The tension mounted as the police did not reach the place till evening. Later, Betanoti SDPO Sudarshan Das and IIC of Badasahi police station Uma Shankar Nayak accompanied by a team of police personnel went to the village to pacify the villagers and request them to withdraw the road blockade.

While the police were engaged in discussion with the agitated villagers, some people mounted an attack on the former.

The police team was taken by surprise as they were not prepared for the sudden attack. Before they could defend themselves or retaliate, several of them were injured in the attack. While the SDPO sustained injuries in the head, the IIC’s hand was fractured and a woman ASI was also injured.

As additional police force was rushed to the spot, the villagers dispersed. The injured police personnel were admitted in the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital at Baripada.

After registering a case in connection with the incident, the police arrested 38 persons from the village and forwarded them to court on Friday.
