5.5 magnitude earthquake hits New York & New Jersey

New York: A rare earthquake measuring 5.5 on Richter scale struck New York and New Jersey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) stated on Friday. The earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles), Reuters reported.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed that tremors were felt across the state. “My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” she said in a post on X.

According to New York City’s Deputy Mayor Fabien Levy, no significant reports of damage or loss have so far been reported.

A United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in Gaza was momentarily suspended due to the earthquake in New York. “Is that an earthquake?” Save the Children spokesperson Janti Soeripto asked during her speech.

Netizens reported about experiencing tremors from Long Island eastward and from Philadelphia up to New York. In a post on X from its official handle, the Empire State Building said: “I AM FINE.”
