Cyclone ‘Michaung’ to trigger heavy rain in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The forecasted cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ over Bay of Bengal is likely trigger heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha, India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

“The depression over southeast adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression by December 2 and further into a cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of Bengal around December 3. Thereafter, it would move northwestwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu coast between Chennai and Machilipatnam around evening of December 4 as a cyclonic storm,” the weather agency said in a special bulletin.

Under its influence, light to moderate rain/ thundershower is likely resume at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti, and at one or two places in remaining districts of coastal Odisha, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on December 3. The intensity of rain is expected to increase for two days thereafter.

December 4: Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Light to moderate rain/thundershower may also occur at many places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Puri, and at a few places in coastal Odisha, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Boudh, and at one or two places in rest districts of the state.

December 5: Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Puri. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is also likely at most places in South coastal Odisha, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur and at many places in remaining parts of Odisha.

“Squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph likely along and off coastal districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur on December 5. Also gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely over Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada districts,” the MeT office further said.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas of southwest Bay of Bengal from December 1 and West Central Bay of Bengal from December 2 and along & off Odisha coast from December 5. “Whoever out at sea is advised to return to coast by December 1.” it said.

Distant cautionary signal no 1 would be hoisted at all ports of Odisha, it added.
