Heatwave to persist in Odisha till June 2

Bhubaneswar: Heatwave condition is likely to persist over several parts of Odisha for the next three days amid the possibility of thunderstorm in some places, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

In its midday bulletin, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar said there will be no large change in maximum temperature during the next three days and the mercury may fall by 2 to 3 degree Celsius thereafter in many places in Odisha.

Hot and humid weather condition is likely to prevail at one or two places of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati in the next 24 hours.

Similarly, thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at one or two places of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri by Friday.

The weather agency issued orange warning for heatwave to severe heatwave at one or two places of Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Kandhamal districts by Friday. Similarly, yellow warning was issued for heatwave at one or two places of Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Malkangiri, Keonjhar, Khurda, Gajapati, and Ganjam during the period.

Warm night conditions will prevail over in Kalahandi, Balangir, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Keonjhar districts. The weather agency also sounded yellow alert about heatwave condition in one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sundargarh on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Mercury shot up to 46.6 degrees Celsius at Jharsuguda by 2.30 pm on Thursday as heat wave conditions swept through large parts of the state. Similarly, Sambalpur recorded 45.6 degree Celsius, Hirakud 44.5 degree Celsius, Rourkela 43.8 degree Celsius and Keonjhar 41.4 degree Celsius by 2.30 pm.
