IMD issues thunderstorm alert for 3 days, 11 dists still ‘rain deficient’

Bhubaneswar: While the intensity of rain has decreased across Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning for several districts during the next 5 days.

According to the midday bulletin, light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Gajapati and Ganjam districts and at one or two places in remaining parts of the state till 8.30 am on Monday. The MeT office has warned of thunderstorm with lightning at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower may continue at some places during the next two days. However, there are no weather warnings during this period.

On August 3o, yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has been issued for one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places in interior Odisha and at one or two places in the coastal districts.

The following day, thunderstorm with lightning is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khurda, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may also occur at a few places across the state.

Despite a few spells of intense rain, Odisha has recorded 780.9 mm rainfall against its normal of 870.5 mm till August 27 this monsoon season. One district has received excess rainfall and 18 are in the normal category. The remaining 11, which includes Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsingpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Ganjam and a few more districts in the southern parts of the state, have seen a shortfall.
