Low pressure in 72 hours, IMD issues heavy rain alert

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall for next five days under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, which may intensify into a low pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal during next 72 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.

While heavy showers with thunderstorm and lightning activity are expected at some places in the state for two days, the intensity of rain may increase from September 13. People have been advised to take shelter at safe places during thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning.

SEPTEMBER 12

Thunderstorm and lightning likely at one or two places in Rayagada, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nawarangpur, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh and Dhenkanal.

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at isolated places in Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Boudh, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi.

SEPTEMBER 13

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely at a few places in Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Cuttack, and Angul. Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at isolated places in Sonepur, Balangir, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Puri, Khurda, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Gajapati.

SEPTEMBER 14

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at a few places in Khurda, Puri, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, and Cuttack. Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) my also occur at isolated places in Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh.

SEPTEMBER 15

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at a few places in Sonepur, Balangir, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Koraput, Boudh. Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is also likely at isolated places in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Deogarh.

The MeT office has warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture, some damage to kutcha road and houses. There is also a probability of waterlogging at underpass road and reduced visibility leading to traffic congestion in urban areas. The farmers have been advised to postpone fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field and keep livestock at safe places.

The wet spell may help Odisha tide over its rain deficit. The state recorded 891.8 mm rainfall against the normal value of 1018.4 mm till September 11 this monsoon season. While 10 districts are experiencing shortfall, the rest 20 districts are in the normal category.
