Mother Held For Throwing Twin Infants Into Well In Odisha’s Angul

Angul: The case of the twin babies, whose bodies were recovered from a well at Bantala in Odisha’s Angul district, took a shocking turn on Thursday with the arrest of the mother.

The arrested has been identified as Tapaswini Sahu.

According to sources, the incident took place at Mundadhipi Sahi in Basala village under Bantala police limits on Wednesday. Sunil Sahu and his wife Tapaswini were blessed with the twins, a boy and a girl, in October last year after 10 years of marriage through IVF. She was reportedly suffering from postpartum depression. She felt tired as the babies would cry the whole night and often spoke about ending her life, said her sister-in-law Rita Sahu, who helped her in taking care of the twins.

Rita found the infants missing when she went to their room after taking a bath last evening. Tapaswini claimed that she had gone to the neighbours’ house after putting the babies to sleep. After frantic search, they finally found the bodies of the twin infants floating in the well. The babies were then rushed to Bantala Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors declared them ‘brought-dead’.

The Sahu family told police that they suspected Tapaswini might have thrown the babies into the well. There was also inconsistency in her statements, following which, she was taken to the police station for interrogation. She later confessed to the crime. The circumstance under which she took the extreme step is still not known.
