Shami bags 5/51, batsmen deliver as India hammer Australia in first ODI

Mohali: Fresh from their Asia Cup triumph, Team India dominated Australia to win the first ODI by 5 wickets here on Friday evening.

Mohammed Shami produced a match-winning bowling performance to bag 5/51 as Australia were bowled out for 276 on a batsmen-friendly track.

The Indian batsmen then did their job to perfection and achieved the target in 48.4 overs. Shubman Gill continued his brilliant run with another sparkling knock (74 off 63 balls).

With skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, rested, Ruturaj opened the innings with Gill, and grabbed the chance with both hands. Gaikwad almost matched Gill stroke for stroke, compiling a classy 71 off 77 deliveries.

Gill and Gaikwad put on 142 runs before Australia tried to get back into the game with 4 wickets in the space of 10 overs. However, skipper KL Rahul (58 not out) and Suryakumar Yadav (50) ensured India’s smooth passage with an 80-run partnership.
