Bhubaneswar: The annual bird census in Odisha will be carried out on January 18. However, the bird counting preparations will start from January 16. As per reports, the bird count will be done on a single day in the entire State this year.
As per sources, tracking of flamingos will be done by fitting GPS trackers. Satellite tracking rings will be attached to the legs of as many as 10 flamingos for the purpose. They will be monitored to find if they are coming from Siberia or from some other places.
“The process for the bird census will start from January 16 and the counting will be carried out on January 18. We will introduce two changes in the counting process. Earlier, counting work was done at different places on different days. However, we will carry out the counting work across the State on one day this time,” said Wildlife PCCF Prem Kumar Jha on Thursday.
“We will also conduct a pre-session on January 17. Counting work at various places will be carried out on January 17,” he added.
Earlier in the 2024 annual bird census in Chilika, the number of birds that flocked to the lake was pegged at 11,37,759 belonging to 187 species. As per the census, in comparison to the previous year’s count, 5,830 more birds visited the lake in 2024.
