Bhubaneswar: Arrival of a new cub on International Tiger Day brought cheer to Nandankanan Zoological Park, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
According to zoo sources, white tigress Mousumi gave brith to three cubs, two of which were stillborn, at 8.51 pm on Monday. The feline has been kept in complete isolation with the cub. They are under CCTV surveillance.
The 8-year-old tigress gave birth to the litter after mating with Royal Bengal Tiger Rajesh and her pregnancy was confirmed by the zoo’s veterinarians through an ultrasonography earlier this month. This was her first confirmed pregnancy after previous attempts with tiger Sahil between July 2021 and July 2023 and tiger Rajesh in January and April 2024.
Tigress Mousumi was born in 2016 at Nandankanan to tiger Manish and tigress Sneha, who died in her enclosure due to haemorrhagic gastritis in April.
In January, white tigress Rupa had also delivered three cubs after mating with tiger Rajesh. While one cub was white the other two were normal (red). Nandankanan now has 28 tigers among which 4 are white tigers.
