Back-to-back low pressures to trigger heavy rain in Odisha till July 19

Bhubaneswar: Two low pressure systems over Bay of Bengal are likely to trigger very heavy rainfall in Odisha till July 19, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

According to the weather agency, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Rayagada on July 15 under the influence of a low pressure, which has formed over northwest adjoining west central Bay of Bengal off South Odisha coast. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is also likely at one or two places in Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati and Balangir. Thunderstorms with lightening may also occur at one or two places in north interior Odisha, Sonepur, Boudh and coastal Odisha.

“Under the influence the low pressure area , squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph very likely over northwest adjoining west central Bay of Bengal off south Odisha coast on July 15-16. Fishermen are advised to not to venture into sea area off south Odisha coast, northwest adjoining west central Bay of Bengal during this period,” according to the special bulletin.

While there is no weather warning for July 16, heavy rain may resume at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Malkangiri and Koraput on July 17 amid the likely formation of a fresh low pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal around July 19. Heavy rain may also occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, and Balangir on July 18.

The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in Koraput and Malkangiri on July 19. Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal districts, it added.

The SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) has earlier predicted formation of a low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal along the Odisha coast on July 15. It further stated that these systems may cause moderate to heavy rainfall at many places over coastal and south Odisha with heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southern districts between July 14 and 17.

“The low pressure system over northwest Bay of Bengal might intensify into a depression on July 18 and 19 and gradually move northwards before crossing north Odisha coast on July 20 evening causing widespread and heavy to very heavy rainfall in north, western and coastal districts extending up to July 21,” it added.
