Bag Politics in Indian Parliament
Bhubaneswar: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra recently made headlines by flaunting her bag in Parliament which had Palestine emblazoned on it with watermelon symbols. However, this move attracted criticism from the BJP, which labelled it as “appeasement”.
Congress leaders called it a “gesture of compassion, commitment to justice and humanity”, as Israel’s ongoing bombardment killed thousands and displaced many in Palestine. However, it was slammed by the BJP, accusing the Congress MP of remaining silent over the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
“She did not speak a word on atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh but wants to make a fashion statement with the Palestine bag,” BJP MP and Anurag Thakur said. Other BJP leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath also criticised her.
The next day, on December 17, she arrived in Parliament carrying a bag that read, “We stand with the Hindus and Christians of Bangladesh”.
Just a week ago, the Congress MP was also seen carrying a bag with a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani on one side and the slogan “Modi Adani Bhai Bhai” printed on the other.
On Friday, BJP MP Aprajita Sarangi gifted a bag with ‘1984’ printed on it, symbolic of the anti-Sikh riots. Notably, the 1984 riots occurred after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination. In the viral video clip, Aprajita Sarangi can be seen gifting the accessory to the Wayanad MP.
Following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, widespread riots broke out against Sikhs in 1984, during which over 2730 people from the community were killed, according to Union Home Ministry data. The Nanavati Commission, appointed to investigate the riots, concluded that Congress leaders including top figures Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar HKL Bhagat, were responsible for the riots.
Speaking to media, Aparajita said, “It was crucial to bring the atrocities of 1984 to light. Since Priyanka ji is so fond of bags, I gave her this one on Sikh massacre in 1984 with drops of blood on it. She was definitely not comfortable and was hesitant at first but then took it and tucked it away.”
The Bhubaneswar MP further stated that the present generation of Congress should be made aware of the historical errors committed by the party while in power for almost 55 years.
