Balangir student commits suicide in hostel hours before annual HSC exam

Bhubaneswar: A Class X boy student allegedly died by suicide in the hostel of Viswatma School at Kamakshinagar in Odisha’s Balangir district hours before commencement of the annual High School Certificate (HSC) examinations.

The deceased has been identified as Binayak Pradhan from Taliudar village in Balangir. He was to appear the exam at Bhagaban Bidya Mandir examination centre in Khujenpali, starting Tuesday.

According to sources, other inmates of the hostel found Binayak hanging inside the washroom this morning and informed the school authorities. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but doctors declared him dead.

“The students had brought him down and tried to revive him. He was a meritorious student. We are unable comprehend as why he took the extreme step. We never put any pressure on the students. It is for the first time that such an incident has been reported in the school,” hostel warden Sambit Kumar told the media.

It is being suspected that he might have taken the extreme step unable to deal with the exam pressure. His family members, however, have blamed the school authorities for his death.

Over 5 lakh students are scheduled to appear in the matric examination, being conducted by the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) in Odisha.
