Bhubaneswar: Rainfall activities, which have remained subdued in Odisha due to a weak monsoon, is expected to increase in September first week with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning for several districts of the state.
With the gradual strengthening of monsoon flow over the state, the intensity of rain is also likely to increase from the beginning of September, the regional head of IMD centre here HR Biswas told the media.
A cyclonic circulation also lies over Northeast & adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and numerical model indicates possibility of a fresh low pressure by September 4, which could further increase the intensity of rain in the state.
According to the midday bulletin of IMD, thunderstorm with lightning may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir and Nuapada on August 31. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is also likely at a few places in coastal Odisha Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir, Nuapada and at one or two places in remaining parts of the state.
On September 1, yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has been issued for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Boudh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Dhenkanal. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places across Odisha.
Heavy rain is likely to resume in the state from the following day.
On September 2, yellow warning of heavy rainfall has been issued for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri. Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places across Odisha.
On September 3, heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Balasore, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Balangir. Yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has also been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri and Ganjam districts. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at most places across in the state on this day.
The weather agency further tweeted that the state may experience widespread rainfall from September 4 under the influence of the cyclonic circulation.
Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) at SOA University here had also forecast formation of a cyclonic circulation over east central and adjoining north-east Bay of Bengal off the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast on Wednesday with movement towards north-west Bay on September 2. “A low pressure area is likely to form in the afternoon of September 3 or morning of September 4 over northwest Bay of Bengal and the system might intensify into a depression on September 5,” a bulletin of Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) at SOA University here said.
While light to moderate rainfall may continue from September 2, widespread precipitation with heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places between September 4 and 7 over the state. There is also a probability of very heavy rain over coastal, north and western Odisha and widespread rainfall with heavy fall at some places in south Odisha. Extremely heavy rain is likely to occur on September 5 and 6 and the spell of rainfall in the ensuing week could offset the deficit rainfall in some of the districts, the bulletin added.
