Former Excise Deputy Commissioner gets 2-year jail term for corruption

Cuttack: A former Deputy Commissioner of Excise was convicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for two years by a special Vigilance court in Odisha for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The special Vigilance court in Cuttack awarded the jail term for Swayambhu Prasad Mishra, former Deputy Commissioner of Excise for Northern Division, Sambalpur, an official release said on Saturday.

Mishra was convicted for possessing disproportionate assets under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Besides the jail term, the court imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on him. The Odisha Vigilance had filed a charge sheet against Mishra under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Following his conviction, the Vigilance Department will now approach the competent authority to initiate proceedings to stop Mishra’s pension.
