Fresh Low Pressure May Trigger Intense Rain Spells In Odisha From August 29

Bhubaneswar: The intensity of rain in Odisha may increase from August 29 with the likely formation of a low-pressure area over Eastcentral and adjoining North Bay of Bengal and its west-northwestwards movement close to South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts during the subsequent 2 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.

According to the weather agency, the state will continue to experience heavy rain on August 27-28 and the intensity is likely to increase during the subsequent three days. “The low-pressure area, which persists over Northwest Jharkhand and neighbourhood, is likely to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand, and north Chhattisgarh & adjoining southeast Uttar Pradesh before gradually weakening during the next 24 hours,” it further said.

On August 27, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at one or two places in Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh and Angul districts.

It had also issued a nowcast warning of light to moderate rain/thundershower in some parts of Khurda (including Bhubaneswar city), Cuttack (including Cuttack city), Nayagarh and Puri districts till 5 pm.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam during the subsequent 24 hours (August 28). Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh districts.

The IMD has issued orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) along with thunderstorm/lightning for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Rayagada districts on August 29. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning may also occur at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nuapada, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri.

On August 30, orange warning of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) has been sounded for one or two places in Malkangiri and Koraput. There is also a yellow warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Rayagada . Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at one or two in Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.

The intensity of rain may gradually decrease thereafter.

On August 31, Heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput districts along with heavy rainfall in Rayagada, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir and Ganjam.

Though there is no further warning, light to moderate rain/thundershower may continue at many places in South Odisha and at a few places in North Odisha on September 1. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is also at a few places across the state on September 2, it added.
