Bhubaneswar: Odisha is currently witnessing intense heatwave conditions with mercury breaching the 43 degrees Celsius mark at several places. The capital city of Bhubaneswar on Friday recorded a maximum temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius.
With a steep rise in maximum temperature and IMD’s alert for heat wave, people should always take extra precautions to stay hydrated. It is also advisable for all to recognize the signs of heat stroke.
According to experts, heat cramps, and heat rashes usually occur during peak hours of the day between 11 am and 3 pm. Hence, all should take precautionary measures during peak hours.
What to Do
- Avoid prolonged heat exposure.
- Wear light-weight, bright colour, loose, cotton clothes.
- Cover your head: Use a wet cloth, hat or umbrella while going out during peak hours.
- Drink sufficient water even if not feeling thirsty to avoid dehydration.
- Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, Torani (rice water), sugarcane juice, lemon water, buttermilk, etc. to rehydrate the body.
- Recognize the signs of heat stroke, heat rash or heat cramps such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating and seizures. If you feel like fainting or ill, see a doctor/ hospital immediately, say experts.
What to Avoid
- Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrate the body.
- One also should avoid high-protein food and should not consume stale food.
- Do not leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
