Huge earthquake topples buildings in Myanmar & Thailand, 144 killed

Delhi: At least 144 people have died, and more than 700 others were injured after a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, authorities confirmed.

Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, in a televised address on state broadcaster MRTV, announced that international assistance had been requested for relief efforts. “I have allowed some offers for support from the AHA Center and India,” he stated.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake, recorded 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) northwest of Sagaing, was followed by a strong aftershock measuring 6.4, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Major General Zaw Min Tun reported that hospitals in Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Sagaing were overwhelmed with casualties as medical facilities struggled to cope with the surge in patients.

The initial quake was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, intensifying the impact. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, which typically results in more severe ground shaking, increasing the risk of damage and casualties.

In Bangkok, a city with over 17 million residents, witnesses described high-rise buildings swaying, causing panic among locals. Hundreds of people rushed onto the streets, while Sky News reported that water splashed out of swimming pools due to the force of the tremors.

However, authorities in Myanmar and Thailand are currently assessing the extent of the damage. Seismologists have warned of possible aftershocks, urging residents, especially those in high-rise structures, to remain cautious.
