Cuttack: In a shocking incident, a man allegedly poured petrol on his son and daughter-in-law and set them ablaze while they were having dinner at a village in Cuttack district. The incident reportedly took place at Barasinga village under the jurisdiction of Barang police station on Saturday night.
Sources said the couple sustained critical burn injuries after the accused, identified as Gobardhan Rout (65), set the two on fire over some family dispute. Nearby residents of the village promptly swung into action and rescued the young couple.
The victims, identified as Dinabandhu Rout (40) and his wife Puja Rout (32), were admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack city with critical burn injuries.
Police have detained the accused who is being questioned.
Preliminary investigation showed that a family dispute led to the incident, while the circumstances that drove the accused to commit the act. Villagers said they heard screams of the victims at around 9 PM and rushed to the scene to find the couple lying on the ground with severe burns.
On being informed, a police team rushed to the spot and sent the victims to the hospital for treatment. The couple’s condition was stated to be critical.
