Maoists-affected districts came down to 7 from 21: DGP

Bhubaneswar: Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha YB Khurania has emphasised the need for maintaining law and order while urging individuals involved in violence to join the mainstream society. His appeal came ahead of a review meeting on the preparation for Hanuman Jayanti celebrations and security arrangements in Sambalpur on Thursday.

Highlighting the Maoist issue, the DGP said that Odisha earlier had 21 districts affected by the Naxal activities but the number has now reduced to seven. However, Maoist movements along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border remain a concern.

“Search operations are ongoing in various locations, and we are witnessing significant success,” the DGP stated.

During his visit to Sambalpur, the DGP held discussions with Superintendents of Police (SPs) from five districts, reviewing strategies to counter Maoist threats and enhance public safety. He reassured that Odisha Police is closely monitoring Maoist activities and taking proactive measures to prevent any resurgence.

Earlier in the day, the DGP attended the Odisha Police Medal Award Ceremony, honouring officers and personnel under the Northern Range. He also visited the Samaleswari Temple, seeking blessings before proceeding with his official engagements.

“There was a time when 21 districts in Odisha which were affected by the Maoist activities. However, the number has come down to 10 and now it is seven. We are committed to wipe out Maoism from the country by March31, 2024,” Khurania said.

“We are keeping a strong vigil on the border which we share with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Acting on the intelligence inputs, operations are also being launched in which we also become successful,” the top cop added.
