The construction of field channels was started in the state since 1976-77. Initially, earthen field channels were constructed with some masonry structures and brick lining at vulnerable points.

The field channels constructed before 2008-09 are now in dilapidated condition /non-functional, resulting in accumulation of water near the outlet and depriving irrigation to the tail end beneficiaries.

The present scheme is extended with an objective to reconstruct the old and dilapidated field channels which have become non-functional and to ensure equitable distribution of available irrigation water up to tail end of the chak by construction of adequate field channel network. This will also bridge the gap between Irrigation Potential Created(IPC) & Irrigation Potential Utilized (IPU) . 1860 km length of field channel will be reconstructed by RCC lining in command area of 62,000 Ha, officials said.
