Odisha Govt likely to ban cow slaughter: Law Minister

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of Assam government’s ban on beef consumption, the Odisha government is planning to promulgate law to ban cow slaughter. This was revealed by Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan while speaking to media persons on Thursday.

The government would take several steps for increasing the cattle population and ensuring their protection. “The government’s stand on cow slaughter is very clear and we are considering bringing a law in this regard. Some private Bills will be introduced in the Assembly in this session. One of those may be related to ban on cow slaughter,” the minister said.

It may be noted that cattle smuggling has been reported from several districts many times. The cattle loaded in inhuman conditions in trucks have been intercepted by the local people while being transported illegally from Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.

Such incidents have also sparked off tension several times with the members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad confronting the cattle smugglers on many occasions.
