Bhubaneswar: Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced ambitious plans to transform Odisha into a major hub for renewable energy.
Speaking at the valedictory session of the two-day Chintan Shivir organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Joshi highlighted the state’s vast potential in the renewable energy sector.
The Union Minister revealed that an agency has commenced work on establishing a 6,000 MW manufacturing capacity for solar modules, solar cells, and ingot-wafer production in Dhenkanal district, with an expected investment of around Rs 9,000 crore.
Additionally, another agency is setting up a 1,000 MW manufacturing capacity for solar modules and cells at Infovalley-II in Bhubaneswar, with an investment of approximately Rs 730 crore.
In a significant move towards sustainable energy, the world-famous Konark Sun Temple is set to be fully powered by solar energy.
This initiative is part of a broader plan to harness Odisha’s renewable energy potential, which includes 140 GW of solar capacity and opportunities in green hydrogen production. The Centre is also exploring the potential for floating solar panels in the state.
Joshi emphasized the Centre’s commitment to developing Odisha as a renewable energy hub, leveraging its long coastline and port infrastructure. He announced the formation of a dedicated task force, in collaboration with the Ministry of Power, to achieve the goal of 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030.
