Odisha Woman Goes Into Labour While Travelling, Delivers Baby With Help Of Docs In Bus

Bhubaneswar: A woman gave birth to a baby on bus with the help of two doctors, also co-passengers, in Odisha on Wednesday night. Both, the mother and the newborn girl are safe and healthy.

According to sources, the incident occurred when the pregnant passenger was en route to Gunupur from Paralakhemundi and suddenly went into labour midway. “The nearest hospital was 30 km and there was delay in the arrival of the ambulance. Following which, we took the permission of the owner and steered the bus towards the hospital. But she delivered the baby on the way,” Santosh Kumar Das, conductor of the bus, told a local channel.

Two doctors Arun Nayak and Sunita Mallick present in the vehicle helped her deliver the baby safely. “Luckily, we were sitting in the back seat. I called my doctor friend who is a gynaecologist who advised us to take her to the nearest hospital. Fortunately, Dr Sunita Mallick was with us and she helped the patient and the newborn in the bus,” said Dr Nayak.

Following the safe delivery, the bus dropped the mother and her newborn to Gunupur sub-divisional hospital before resuming its onward journey. “The passengers and the bus employees and everyone present cooperated. Since she is short in height, we feared that she might be anaemic. However, we managed to deliver the baby safely in the bus and brought them to Gunupur hospital,” Dr Mallick told the media.

Superintendent, Gunupur sub-divisional hospital, Ramesh Sahu confirmed that both the mother and the newborn baby are healthy.
