Sambalpur: In another seizure of unaccounted cash before elections in Odisha, police have seized Rs 3.5 lakh from a car in Khetrajpur of Sambalpur district.
As per reports, the car was intercepted on suspicion by a team from Khetrajpur police station was patrolling during checking near Laxmi Duburi in the town. On checking the vehicle, they found the money in Rs 500 denomination.
On being questioned, the car driver said he was carrying the money from Ainthapalli in Sambalpur city to Khetrajpur.
The IIC of Khetrajpur police station said the driver has claimed that the money was the premium amount collected by an insurance company from its customers. But he could not produce any document in support of the claim.
Since more than Rs 50,00 is not allowed to be carried without permission as per election restrictions, the money has been seized and will be deposited in the government treasury. It will be returned to the rightful owner after valid documents are produced with the authorities, he added.
It may be noted that the police had seized around Rs 3.7 lakh unaccounted money from a vehicle on the way to Chhattisgarh from Khariar Road in Nuapada district.
The elections to Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat and Assembly segments under it in the third phase in the state on May 25.
