Rayagada: At least eight persons died and 25 were injured when coaches of Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train and Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger Special derailed after collision in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district around 7 pm on Sunday.
According to East Coast Railway (ECoR), two coaches of Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train from the rear and the loco of Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger got derailed in the accident, which is being attributed to overshooting of signal by Visakhapatnam- Rayagada passenger train.
While explaining the term overshooting, the CPRO said it occurs when a train, instead of stopping at a red signal, moves on.
Some compartments have derailed and were standing outside the tracks. No casualty has been reported so far. But the compartments were reportedly damaged seriously due to the mishap.
Railway officials have rushed to the spot and started rescue operation with the help of the locals and some voluntary organisations, the sources said.
