Bhubaneswar: In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the conscience of the capital city of Bhubaneswar after a one-and-a-half-year-old child was allegedly abducted from the lap of his visually impaired mother near the Ram Mandir area in Bhubaneswar in the early hours of Sunday. The shocking crime occurred around 3 AM, leaving the city in deep concern over the safety of vulnerable sections of society.
Bhubaneswar DCP on Monday informed that a child kidnapping case has been registered based on the FIR filed by the Divyang woman. The incident occurred near the Ram Mandir in Bhubaneswar. “We are trying to rescue the child. Multiple teams have been formed and based on human and technical intelligence we are trying to rescue the kid. As the investigation is going on, we cannot divulge many details as of now. Whatever steps are needed to rescue the child, we are taking all of that. Any person can also share any information or clue regarding the case with us,” he added.
According to reports, the mother and child—both living in extreme poverty—had taken shelter on the pavement near Ram Mandir, a location known to be frequented by the homeless and destitute seeking temporary refuge. The mother, who is visually challenged, was reportedly asleep with her child cradled in her arms when an unknown miscreant stealthily approached, lifted the child, and fled the scene after offering some juice to the woman’s first child.
The mother only realized her child was missing after waking up shortly following the incident. Distraught and helpless, she cried for help, drawing the attention of bystanders who immediately alerted the police. A case was promptly registered under kidnapping charges at the Kharavela Nagar Police Station.
Following the incident, the Bhubaneswar Police launched an intensive search operation. The police are also coordinating with transport hubs such as railway stations and bus terminals, alerting all outposts and checkpoints. Local sources have confirmed that several neighbouring police stations have been notified, and surveillance has been heightened across the city. The Commissionerate Police and Child Welfare Committees have also been informed and may be brought into the investigation if required.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the city and raised serious concerns over the safety of women, children, and the homeless in Bhubaneswar. Civic society groups and child rights activists have expressed their outrage and urged the administration to not only trace the child but also to implement stronger security and rehabilitation measures for the city’s most vulnerable citizens.
This tragic case has underscored the urgent need for a dedicated shelter and safety mechanism for the homeless, particularly women and children, who are often the silent sufferers of urban neglect. The entire city now watches with bated breath, hoping for a miracle that will reunite a grieving mother with her lost child.
